Almost lost over 300gigs

Post by hippyd » Sat May 09, 2009 4:20 pm

I have a maxtor one touch 4 500gb external which I use to store all my vids, pics and mp3's. It's been playing up lately, first it wouldnt turn off when pc turned off, the pc started not recognising it sometimes, now it wont recognise it at all. Thought all my stuff had gone :x Did some internet research on it and realised it stuffs up often and that you can pull the hard drive out of it and stick it in one of those enclosures and usb it to ya pc. I bought an enclosure today for 45 bux, pulled the maxtor apart and stuck the hard drive in it and plugged it in. It worked and all my stuff was still there :D what a fooken relief that was. Have backed up all my stuff just in case anything else happens. Imagine losing every vid, pic and song u have accumulated over years

Having actually lost about 200 gig worth of irreplaceable stuff (not pr0n :) but research, work, family digital photos etc) I'm glad to hear you dodged that bullet. I now use an online backup service. Costs me about US$50/yr for unlimited backup and it happens at night in the background. Plus I can restore files over the web from anywhere in the world - handy if I'm at work or a friends place and need a file off the home PC. Pretty cheap insurance.

Not trying to sell anything, just giving my "once bitten, twice shy" experience.

I feel your pain seriously.

I lost about 450gbs worth of music, pictures, tv shows and porn about 2 months ago none of which was backed up. I've since replaced that with a 1tb and 500gb internal Hdd and another 1tb external Hdd for backing up only. i would advise anyone who downloads large quantities of data to backup your stuff at least every month or so.

Petersod, you've sold me, what's the service called. :)

SELFEDIT: Blast! Just realised he can't. Oh well. :(

My apologies to the mods for breaching the forum rules (which I admit I hadn't read properly). Jester, if you search for "online backup service" I'm sure you'll find something :)
